How to Prepare for Newborn Photos
Every parent knows that capturing your newborn is a very big deal. Around this time, there is so much changing and happening in your life. This is why it is totally normal to feel a little uncertain about how to prepare for newborn photos. Whether you’re wondering what to wear, how to set up your home, or how to soothe your baby, this guide will help you prepare for newborn photos with ease.
Let’s not stress! This guide is here to make your newborn photography experience smooth and easy. Follow these 10 tips, and you too can have a session that runs smoothly, resulting in images you’ll cherish forever.
1. Plan Ahead for the Best Timing
One of the most important aspects of newborn photography is time. When preparing for newborn photos keep in mind the best photos are captured during the first 7-14 days of life.
Why? Well, during this period, babies tend to sleep deeply and swaddle better for their newborn photography session. Booking your session in advance ensures you get the timing right and guarantees your photographer’s availability. The sooner you plan, the better! I suggest 5-6 months in advance.

2. Choose the Right Photographer
Before we jump into choosing a photographer, I want you to know this important tip: choose a photographer who specializes in newborns! Not all photographers specialize in newborns, so it’s crucial to choose someone who knows how to work with babies and can guide you on how to prepare for newborn photos.
Secondly, you want to consider a photographer who will not only create beautiful images but also provide an experience everyone can enjoy. Look at their portfolio to ensure they have a style you love, and read reviews from other clients to get a sense of their professionalism.

3. Create a Calm Environment
Newborn photography can take some time—sometimes up to 1-2 hours—so it’s essential to create a calm and relaxed environment for your little one.
Babies tend to get fussy when they’re too hot or cold, so make sure the room is comfortably warm. Temperature of your home is good to think about when preparing for an in-home session. Also, minimize noise and distractions to help your baby stay relaxed during the session.
4. Prepare Baby’s Essentials to be Prepared
Before your newborn photoshoot, make sure you’ve got everything your baby might need within arm’s reach. This includes wipes, burp cloths, and a pacifier. Being organized is an essential step as you prepare for newborn photos. Babies are unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to be prepared. Trust me, you don’t want to be scrambling for supplies in the middle of a shoot.
5. Why Saddling is the Best for Newborn Photos
For the best newborn photos, comfort is key. Swaddling your baby for the session can and will work wonders. A simple white swaddle is always a great option. If you want to provide your own swaddle avoid busy patterns, logos, or any non stretchy material. Neutral colors tend to photograph the best—think whites, creams, or soft pastels. The simpler, the better, so your baby’s natural beauty is the main focus.
6. Coordinate Outfits for the Family
If you plan to be included in the photos, be sure to coordinate your outfits with your partner and any siblings. Choose neutral, complementary colors that don’t clash. Avoid anything too bright or flashy—these can distract from the baby. And remember, comfort is just as important for parents! You’ll feel more at ease, and that will reflect in your photos.

7. Sleep Baby Trick
This is my secret trick and it works every time! Keep your baby awake for one hour before your scheduled session time. This is a great job for dad so mom can finish getting ready.
When you keep baby awake, your little one is more likely to fall into a deep, peaceful sleep, making it easier to capture those sweet moments. (I can always tell if clients follow this step) This is so important to follow if you want your session to run smoothly.
8. Keep Baby Fed and Happy
It might sound obvious, but a fed and content baby is much easier to photograph! Right before the session, try to feed your baby, so they’re full and calm. If you’re breastfeeding, it can also be a good time for bonding and ensuring the baby is well-fed before starting the shoot. A happy baby leads to happy parents—and the best photos!
Nursing or bottle feeding shots are so sweet! If you are interested in capturing these moments let your photographer know in advance. This can happen before or after the session.

9. Personal Touches
A way to keep your images unique and special to your family is by including personal touches into the newborn photos, like a special blanket, a family heirloom, or a custom name sign.
If you have any props you’d like to incorporate, let your photographer know in advance. Simple props like a cute headband, a soft blanket, or tiny shoes can add a lovely personal element to the photos. I always provide a white swaddle, flower headbands, and hats.
10. Be Ready to Go With the Flow
Newborns and newborn photos are unpredictable. It’s important to be flexible. Babies don’t always cooperate with our plans, and sometimes the perfect shot happens when you least expect it.
Stay patient, trust your photographer, and embrace the experience. Often, the most cherished memories come from moments that don’t go as planned. You’ll be amazed at how beauty shines through even in the unexpected, creating truly perfect treasures.
