Newborn session with a baby in a white swaddle.

This is an exciting time in your life so of course you want to document it. Newborns grow and change so fast! This is why so often people ask what age should you take newborn photos? While my short answer is within the first two weeks there is way more to it!

We are going to tackle a lot of questions so stay with me!

How late is too late for newborn pictures?

Newborn sessions are scheduled seven to fourteen days out from baby’s birth. This is for more than one reason.

I schedule the newborn no earlier than seven days old so mom has time to heal. Posing can be difficult and uncomfortable if mom is still to sore. Moms comfort is one of my top priorities in these types of sessions. I never put mom in anypose that is uncomfortable for her.

I try my best not to schedule past 14 days because baby has developed so much. You baby will no longer be as flexible, their stomachs will be bigger meaning, they need to feed more often, which means they go potty more too. This can become difficult to keep the baby comfortable and asleep when baby demands more feeding and diaper changing.

Is there such thing as too late? Is 1 month too old for newborn pictures?

Technically no, however, you may not be able to get the newborn session you were hoping for. Like I said above in the 7-14 day range it is so much easier to wrap and get the baby asleep and comfortable. As the baby grows it is still possible to have a great session there is just more to consider.

When baby is past two weeks old you will not be able to have the swaddled snuggly photos you want. They also will be more likely to cry and not be in the best mood because we were unable to swaddle them.

Milestone Session

Milestone sessions are the perfect way to document your growing baby. They typically start at three months old. These sessions are different from newborn sessions in the fact that they display how much your baby has grown and developed a personality. There is no sleeping in this session. You will receive so many heartwarming images of your baby caught in candid moments. The most common ages for these are three, six, nine, and twelve months old.

When should I book my baby’s newborn photo session?

Should I book while I’m still expecting?

Yes! you should absolutely schedule your session while you are expecting. There are two reasons, one is like I described above, there is such a short window to book your newborn sessions. Seven to fourteen days is not a lot of time. Secondly, you need time to plan your session. You can plan your outfits, what rooms you want the photos done in, preparing your other kids for the session. If you wait until you have your baby it can be stressful and not fun!

When to Book a Newborn Session?

You should be reaching out to your photographer when you are 6 months out from your due date. Six months out from your due date will give you loads of time to slowly prepare for your session in a way that is not overwhelming. This will also ensure that you have a secured spot in the calendar so your not scrambling for an opening last minute.

You can check out my What to Wear blog post for more tips on how to dress for your session.

I also have a helpful post all about how to prepare your house check that out here!

When to Book a Maternity Session?

When scheduling your maternity session you should reach out to your photographer at 6 months and schedule when you are 7-8 months out. In this stage your belly will be the perfect size to capture and remember! This is also typically fare enough away from your due date (just incase you go early). If you know that you tend to deliver early be sure to notify your photographer so you can all plan accordingly.
