How to Prep Your Space

Lifestyle sessions are my favorite type of session. What is a life style session? a lifestyle session takes place in your home where we use natural light from your windows to capture you and your family. I use this type of session for all of my newborn session. I know lots of times my clients don’t like the appearance of their home. They tell me their home is not “picture worthy” or needs to be “updated”. I am here to help you prep your space fast and easy so you can feel confident for your next session!

Step One Pick Two

Lets get you started on the right path. Your session can happen anywhere there are windows. I use the natural light for your photos so this is very important when picking your spaces. The two best spaces for your session to happen in are your master bedroom and nursery! The master bedroom is a great place to get those cosy candid pictures you have been dreaming of. I know how much time you have spent putting together the best space possible for your newborn so I want to document it for you. Once in a while in search of the best light we can do your session in the living room or even kitchen! However I try to stick to the master bedroom and nursery. When I arrive try to have two spaces prepared for the session to take place. Keep those spaces in your mind as your read.

Step Two Clean it Up!

If you are anything like me you to have that pile of donations in the corner of your room. Maybe its a suite case that you have not unpacked, or laundry waiting to be washed or folded. If you are really like me you have been avoiding taking care of whatever is taking up space in your room its time to clean it up! This is the perfect motivation for us to clean up our spaces and make it look nice again.

Step Three Take it Out!

Once your spaces are tidy up this is when the real magic begins. I want you to take a minuet to scroll through Pinterest or look at a magazine and take notice of the rooms photographed. No, your space won’t look like the pictures you will see and that is perfectly fine! (Very few houses do!)

What I want you to be noticing is how little there is in the room. Lets not go crazy! Lets leave the big thing and focus on the little simple things. Look at your head bored, on top of your dresser, or any shelf or space you have things sitting. Take out the tissue box, tv remote, candy, random books, clocks, etc… Like I said earlier don’t go to crazy but just think about things that might not look so nice in your picture. You can move them all to one side of the room, or put them in a box and take them out for the morning.

Bonus Tip Brighton it up:

Adding a white comforter and taking your screens out of your windows will bring even more light into your space! You can incorporate this into this step if you would like to.

Step Back and Take a Breath

Now its time to step back and take a breath. Look at what you just did. Maybe its not your dream space but its your space! Remember I am a people centered photographer and I take pride in making my subjects “YOU” the start of the photo not your house. Most of the time the chipped paint, old chair, or anything else that drives you crazy won’t even be in the photo! Lets have fun and document this special time in your life.
